Three California lines that are not the same job

The statute is short. § 17701.13 says the LLC shall designate and continuously maintain in this state an office and an agent. The agent is an individual resident or a corporation that has complied with § 1505. If you designate a corporate agent, you do not even put that agent’s street on the instrument — which is the opposite of “use the mailbox as the agent.”
The California Secretary of State’s FAQ is equally plain: an agent is who accepts court papers; the agent’s physical street is a public record; a business entity cannot be its own agent. None of that language is about mail scanning.
What a virtual mailbox is good for on a California LLC
- Keeping a house in La Jolla or elsewhere off the public principal-office line, if the state accepts the CMRA street you chose. Shoeboxed’s 2026 guide is the practical walkthrough of that privacy problem — home addresses get scraped onto Yelp and Maps.
- Catching IRS and EDD envelopes that look like junk. That is a mail-grade problem. Owned hubs beat marketplace stores here.
- Receiving vendor checks and licenses while you travel.
What it is not good for: pretending you have a staffed office on Google; opening Mercury with that suite as the physical address; skipping an agent because “the mailbox will sign for certified mail.” Certified mail is not service of process.
Which mailbox product, if you already have an agent
If Northwest, a lawyer, or a corporate 1505 agent already covers service, shop the mailbox as a mailbox.
- Owned hub in California if you can live with the city they offer. US Global Mail markets owned rooms including California. VirtualPostMail markets California TruLease inventory separately from its mailbox. PhysicalAddress.com’s 2026 reviews emphasize Delaware and Nevada more than a San Diego storefront — confirm live CA inventory before you assume it.
- San Diego marketplace store if the zip code is the point. That is a store pick. Use the San Diego scorecard. Prefer an operator you can call (Miramar Postal Plus publishes its own partner page) over an anonymous downtown suite.
- Do not buy “registered agent included” and stop thinking. iPostal1 has advertised a $99/year agent add-on in a list of states that, as of Startup Owl’s August 2026 read of iPostal1’s site, did not include California. If a brand later adds CA, you still need a real 1505 corporate agent or a resident individual — not a software checkbox.

Banking after you file
California formation does not bind Mercury. If you put the CMRA on the articles and then type the same line into Mercury’s physical-address field, you are arguing with Mercury’s CMRA rule, not with Sacramento. Home-as-operating-address is what their eligibility page allows. Relay will let the agent be the legal address and still wants a real operating address. Details: what banks accept.
Form 1583 still happens
Every CMRA mailbox, California or not, needs PS Form 1583. The home address on that form is where you live, not the PMB. Do not copy the mailbox into item 4f / 9b.
If the house is already on the filing
Shoeboxed’s checklist is the one we would follow rather than invent another: activate the mailbox, file IRS Form 8822-B, amend or update the California Statement of Information, tell the bank, tell the agent, then grind through vendors. Cached Maps and Yelp records lag. A new mailbox does not erase last year’s scrape.
