Where letters go
A PO Box usually works here. It is the line built for mail.
Where the company is
States that spell it out ask for a street. A PO Box is not a street.
Who accepts a lawsuit
A person or company at a street in the state. A PO Box cannot hold a lawsuit.
The short answer, line by line
Most formation forms ask for more than one address. People get stuck when they type the same PO Box into every box.
The mailing address is where the state sends notices. Many states allow a PO Box there. The principal office is the company's main office. States that describe it ask for a street address. The registered agent is the person or company that accepts service of process. Service of process means someone hands over the papers that start a lawsuit. That job needs a street where papers can be handed to a person, so a PO Box fails it in every state we checked.
A PO Box is a locked box inside a post office. You rent it from the Postal Service with PS Form 1093 and two IDs. The PO Box vs virtual mailbox guide explains what it is and what it is not. What a PO Box costs covers the price.
What four states say
Florida
The Sunbiz instructions for articles of organization are the clearest example. The principal office is "the street address of the LLC's principal office." The mailing address is listed if it is different, and the instructions say "P.O. Box is acceptable." The registered agent must have a physical street address in Florida, and the instructions say not to list a P.O. Box. The fee table lists the articles at $100. The full Sunbiz walk-through is on a virtual address for an LLC in Florida.
Texas
Texas Business Organizations Code § 5.201 says the registered office must be a street address where process may be personally served on the agent. It does not have to be a place of business. It may not be solely a mailbox service or a telephone answering service. The Secretary of State's Form 401, used to change the agent or office, labels the field "Street Address (No P.O. Box)." The certificate of formation, Form 205, also asks for an initial mailing address for franchise tax letters. That is the line for a box.
California
California Corporations Code § 17702.01 says the articles state the street address of the initial principal office, and a mailing address if it is different. The agent is listed with a name and a street address. The statement of information under § 17702.09 repeats those lines every two years. The statute text we read does not use the words PO Box. It says street address on every line except mailing. The California details are on the California LLC page.
Delaware
6 Del. C. § 18-104 says a Delaware LLC keeps a registered office in the state and a registered agent with a business office at that same address. Subsection (k) says the address must include the street, number, city, and postal code. Subsection (e)(2) says an agent may not do the job solely through a virtual office, a mail forwarding service, or both. A PO Box is neither a street nor an agent.
The IRS address
The IRS has its own rule for the mailing line. The Form 8822-B instructions say to enter a box number instead of a street address only if your post office does not deliver mail to your street address. Form 8822-B is the form a business uses to change its mailing address, its location, or its responsible party with the IRS. The same form has a separate line for the business location, and that line asks for a street, room or suite number, city, state, and ZIP Code.
The form also allows mail "in care of" someone else, such as an accountant. You write C/O and that person's name and address. That is a different choice from a PO Box.
Banks and Google
KYC means Know Your Customer: the checks a bank uses to confirm who you are. A bank asks where the business operates. Relay's help page, updated August 11, 2026, says an operating address cannot be a PO Box, a virtual mailbox, or a registered agent address. Mercury says it does not accept a P.O. box as the physical address. Mercury also says the mailing address must be a physical address that USPS can deliver to. Read each field label before you type the box. What banks accept reads those fields one bank at a time.
Google Business Profile is the listing Google uses for Maps and search. Google's guidelines say P.O. boxes are not acceptable. A business that serves customers at their homes can hide its address instead. A PO Box still is not the address you enter.
If you do not want your home on the filing
This is the usual reason people reach for a PO Box. The box keeps letters off your porch. It does not fill the street lines.
For the registered agent, you can hire a registered agent company in the state. Its street goes on the agent line. For the principal office, read your state's form and use the street it asks for. Some owners use a street at a commercial mail receiving agency (CMRA). A CMRA is a private business the Postal Service lets receive mail for other people. It is a street, not a PO Box. USPS Form 1583 is the USPS form that authorizes a CMRA to accept your mail. Whether a state accepts that street as the principal office is the state's call, and most pages we read do not answer it in writing. A virtual address for an LLC and a free virtual address for an LLC walk through those choices.
A private mailbox in a city can hold LLC mail the same way a PO Box does, plus packages from any carrier. Austin, Miami, Los Angeles, and Wilmington list the streets this site checked. None of those streets is a registered agent.
A setup that matches the forms
-
Registered agent: a street in the state
You, if your state lets an owner who lives there serve, or a registered agent company. Never a PO Box.
-
Principal office: a street
Where the company is run. That can be your home in many states. Read the form's own words.
-
Mailing address: a PO Box is fine where the form says so
Florida says so in writing. Texas asks for a mailing address for franchise tax letters.
-
IRS: a street unless the post office does not deliver
The 8822-B instructions allow a box number only in that case.
-
Bank: the operating address is a real place
A PO Box fails that field at Relay and Mercury. Use the mailing field for mail, if the bank has one.
Questions people ask first
Can I use a PO Box for my LLC's registered agent?
No. Florida's instructions say not to list a P.O. Box. Texas requires a street where process can be served. Delaware requires a street and number.
Can my LLC's mailing address be a PO Box?
Often yes. Florida's instructions say so. Check the form for your state.
Can I put a PO Box on my EIN paperwork?
Only if your post office does not deliver to your street, per the Form 8822-B instructions. The business location line asks for a street.
Will a bank accept a PO Box for my LLC?
Not as the operating address at Relay or Mercury. Some banks have a separate mailing field. Read the label.
Is a UPS Store box the same as a PO Box?
No. A UPS Store box is a street at a private business, written with PMB or # and a box number. It is a CMRA. A PO Box is at the post office.
