A street at a store
The store's address plus PMB or # and your number. Packages from any carrier.
A box at the post office
PO Box and a number. Private carriers only where Street Addressing is offered.
Packages or letters
Lots of packages: the store box. Letters on a budget: the PO Box.
What a UPS Store mailbox is
The UPS Store personal mailbox page, read October 20, 2026, says your address uses the store's address with either PMB (private mailbox) or the pound symbol (#) for your box. Your name goes first. The page lists package acceptance from all carriers. It says most locations offer 24-hour access. Mail holding and mail forwarding are offered, and additional charges may apply.
Under postal rules, the store is a commercial mail receiving agency (CMRA). A CMRA is a private business the Postal Service lets receive mail for other people. Section 508.1.8 of the Domestic Mail Manual covers it. USPS Form 1583 is the USPS form that authorizes a CMRA to accept your mail. The UPS Store page says you show two valid forms of ID, one with a photo, and each person who gets mail at the box completes PS Form 1583. The steps are on Form 1583.
Each location is its own business. The UPS Store page says the mailbox agreement is between that location and the primary box holder. It says prices may vary and the minimum length of an agreement may vary, because each location is individually owned and operated.
What a PO Box is
The USPS PO Box page calls it a locked mailbox inside a Post Office. You rent it for 3, 6, or 12 months. You fill out PS Form 1093 and show two forms of ID. You get two keys or a combination. The price depends on the box size and the ZIP Code. What a PO Box costs explains how that bill is built.
A plain PO Box address takes Postal Service mail. Some post offices offer Street Addressing. There you write the post office street with # and your box number, and the USPS page says UPS, FedEx, DHL, and Amazon packages can then reach the box. Section 508.4.1.2 of the manual says that option is only at competitive locations and needs a customer agreement.
UPS mailbox vs PO Box, side by side

UPS mailbox cost vs PO Box cost
Neither one prints a single national price. The UPS Store page says prices vary by location. The USPS page says PO Box pricing differs by location and sends you to its finder. So the honest comparison is local: call the store, look up the post office, and compare the same term.
Compare the whole bill. A UPS Store can charge for forwarding, holding, or text alerts on top of the box, and its page marks those with "additional fees may apply." A PO Box has key deposits, an extra-key fee, and a late charge if you renew more than 10 days after the due date, per section 508.4.7 of the manual. If you need packages from private carriers, add the cost of the trips you would make to pick up packages that a plain PO Box could not take.
This site's city pages show what store mailboxes print. Cheyenne lists one UPS Store mailbox door. Fargo lists four UPS doors and their pickup times. Wilmington lists three UPS doors next to app prices that do not all agree. Read the city page for the store you would use.
When a UPS Store mailbox is the better buy
- You order a lot online, and stores refuse a PO Box at checkout.
- You want someone to sign for packages. The UPS Store business page lists "We Sign for Packages."
- Your post office does not offer Street Addressing.
- You want a street line on envelopes, written with PMB or #.
When a PO Box is the better buy
- You mostly get letters.
- You want the Postal Service, not a franchise store, to hold the mail.
- You want a price set by a public rule, not by one store owner.
- Your post office offers Street Addressing, so private-carrier packages can reach the box anyway.
What neither box does
Both fail the same tests a business runs into. KYC means Know Your Customer: the checks a bank uses to confirm who you are. Relay's help page, updated August 11, 2026, says an operating address cannot be a PO Box, a virtual mailbox, or a mailbox rental service. A UPS Store box is a mailbox rental. What banks accept covers each bank's fields.
Google Business Profile is the listing Google uses for Maps and search. Google's guidelines say P.O. boxes and mailboxes at remote locations are not acceptable. A rented mailing address where you do not operate is not eligible. The store's suite number does not change that.
State filings have their own rule for the registered agent. Texas Business Organizations Code § 5.201 says the registered office may not be solely a mailbox service. A UPS Store box can hold a company's mail. It does not accept a lawsuit for the company. Can an LLC use a PO Box walks through the lines on a filing.
A third option: a virtual mailbox
A virtual mailbox is also a CMRA street. The difference is the screen. Staff photograph the outside of each envelope, and you choose to open, scan, ship, or shred it. Some packing stores on this site's city pages are sold through mailbox apps that add that photo step. A company-run room is a mailroom the mailbox company staffs itself. PO Box vs virtual mailbox compares the post office box with that product. How a virtual mailbox works follows one letter.
If you travel, a store box still needs someone to pick it up or forward it. A virtual mailbox is built for reading mail from away. The grades on this site rate the room, not the logo. VirtualPostMail and US Global Mail run their own rooms. iPostal1 and Anytime Mailbox send your mail to local stores. The methodology page explains the letters.
Questions people ask first
Is a UPS Store mailbox a PO Box?
No. It is a box at a private store, with a street address and PMB or #. A PO Box is at the post office.
Can I write "Suite" instead of PMB on a UPS Store box?
The UPS Store page says the address uses PMB or #. Section 508.1.8 of the USPS manual says a CMRA address uses PMB or #, and mail without it can come back.
Is a UPS mailbox more expensive than a PO Box?
Both prices are local. The UPS Store sets its own. USPS sets the PO Box fee by size and ZIP Code. Compare the same term at the two places you would use.
Can a PO Box get UPS packages?
Only where the post office offers Street Addressing. Ask at the counter.
Can I use a UPS Store box for my business bank account?
Not as the operating address at Relay, which rules out mailbox rentals. Some banks take a separate mailing address.
