Each vendor gets three grades. The grades can disagree. A store-network mailbox can be a C− for mail and an F for banking on the same day. That is the point. Letters are explained on the methodology page. They are not Trustpilot restatements. Public complaint-board scores are labeled reported. That means we cite the claim. It is not our mail grade.

1. Mail: scanning, packages, and whether lost-mail reports cluster on public complaint boards.
2. Banking / KYC: KYC means Know Your Customer: the checks a bank uses to confirm who you are. This grade asks whether the address is a Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (CMRA). A CMRA is a private business allowed to receive mail for other people. Mercury, Relay, Bluevine, and Stripe’s money products often refuse a CMRA as the place you work.
3. Google Business Profile: Google Business Profile (GBP) is the listing Google uses for Maps and search. Google’s written rules say you cannot list a rented mailbox as a place customers can visit.

A 2-minute path for a California LLC

1. Mail is a store you can call. If you need scans, pick the counter, not the app logo. In San Diego the callable row is Miramar Postal Plus. An office-suite pin is not a recommendation.
2. A registered agent is not a mailbox. California still wants an agent for service of process. Service of process means accepting a lawsuit. The mailbox holds paper. It does not accept a lawsuit. See the California LLC page.
3. A CMRA is the wrong product for Mercury. Mercury is not a CMRA, and Mercury’s own help page refuses a CMRA as the physical place of business. Buy a mailbox for mail.

What the CMRA flag actually is

A CMRA is a private business authorized to receive mail for other people. USPS requires PS Form 1583 (June 2024) before that business can accept your mail. Banks and payment companies do not have to like that arrangement. They check address databases. When the match is a mail-receiving agency, they often stop the application.

Mercury’s company-address article says it does not accept a P.O. box, virtual address, commercial mail receiving agency, mail center, or registered agent address as the physical place of business. Relay’s help center (updated August 11, 2026) says an operating address cannot be a registered agent, a PO Box, or a virtual mailbox / mailbox rental. Bluevine’s application help refuses registered agent addresses and P.O. boxes. It does not, on that page, define virtual offices one way or the other. Stripe’s Issuing / Treasury / Opal / Corporate Card docs now emit invalid_address_cmra_address.

Google Business Profile is a third job

Google’s guidelines for representing your business say P.O. boxes and mailboxes at remote locations are not acceptable. A rented mailing address you do not operate from, “also known as a virtual office”, is not eligible. Service-area businesses can hide an address. They cannot turn a packing store into a Maps pin. Almost every mailbox on this site is an F on that grade. That is Google’s rule, not our attitude.

Reported complaints vs. marketing stars

Shoeboxed’s 2026 LLC address guide, written by a former Earth Class Mail CEO, calls iPostal1 the most-searched provider in the category. It then warns that partner-store quality varies. Size helps coverage. Size can hide a weak store.

iPostal1’s marketing site advertises thousands of addresses and a BBB accreditation. Complaint boards tell a narrower story. ComplaintsBoard showed a 2.2 / 5 reputation score from 24 reviews and 17 complaints, updated April 16, 2026. A featured review dated April 15, 2026 is titled “Stay away from ipostal1” and describes a reported lost Amazon delivery at a Staples-hosted mailbox in Greenville, South Carolina. PissedConsumer showed 2.1 / 5 from 24 reviews, page updated July 21, 2026. Startup Owl’s August 2026 review cites Reddit threads titled “Stay away from ipostal1” (r/llc) and “Ipostal1 Scam” (r/vandwellers), and notes a Trustpilot 4.3 next to 222 BBB complaints. Those numbers can be true at the same time. Happy users rate an app. Angry users file a complaint after a package disappears at a store iPostal1 does not employ.
